Planning the interview

Planning an interview is in some ways similar to planning a participant observation. Initially, a researcher needs to identify suitable people to interview, recruit them to the study and schedule appointments. Decisions about sampling are discussed in Chapter Three. Identifying interviewees is often a fluid process. For example, it might be clear in your research plan that you aim to interview 40 nurses with a range of different levels of experience in aged-care nursing. However, actually finding these nurses will probably involve a number of different strategies. Examples include advertising, contacting aged care facilities or hospitals, approaching professional organisations, making use of contacts and asking for suggestions from nurses you have already interviewed. Recruitment for interviews is often a challenge. It always takes longer than you expect and it is helpful to use a number of different methods. The most important lessons I have learnt are to follow up interested people as quickly as possible and to locate key informants and ask them to help recruit potential interviewees.
